White Dahlia Design

If you haven't already checked out part 1 of our before and after open-concept living and dining room makeover, make sure you do. We dig deep into the design process from start to finish where we discuss all the key elements that contributed to this beautifully unique space, bursting with personality!

For part two we will be digging into more specifics such as the items that were sourced in order to achieve the design aesthetic and feel of a Mid-Century Modern design mixed with Bohemian vibes. We'll also give you tips and tricks on how to incorporate your own unique personal touches so your space truly feels like your own.

Part 1 Quick Recap

The first step with this project was to identify key problems that didn't work, as well as discuss the core needs of our client. The existing space lacked personality, seating, window treatments, and had a nonfunctional furniture layout. So the key elements focused on in this design were to bring in much-needed personality, color, and functionality. Next came the client's inspiration and vision which was a unique and colorful mix of Mid-Century Modern and Bohemian. From there, the sourcing of the appropriately sized furniture and decor began, making sure to offer two layout options we found worked best in this space (we love to show you variations of your design with our Stress-Free Package).

Some people may have a specific interior design style that they gravitate towards, while others need a little more guidance. If you're one of those that need a little help - have no fear! We've created an easy style quiz just for you. On a side note, if you love the television show Friends, we've developed a fun quiz for you to find out which friends character you are based on your design style! However much you like to lead a Rachel-enthused lifestyle you may be surprised to find out who your interior aesthetic is most like!

Personality vs. Cookie Cutter

There are tons of Interior Design styles, each with core aspects that differentiate them from one another. However, a design style all on its own is more so just an aesthetic that is lacking personality. Create a space that feels true to who you are by incorporating your own personal items such as keepsakes, collectibles, and photos. Our client really wanted to showcase her travel photos so we decided to create a cute little gallery wall that really complimented the space. Another great way to showcase your personal items is by styling your surface or shelves. Check out our shelf styling post for a step by step guide.

One of the key problem areas for this living room was a built-in floating shelf that was formerly used as a tv ledge. Instead of getting rid of it, we decided to relocate the television to use as a focal point for the room and style this corner instead. Following our go-to shelf styling steps, we were able to utilize this corner in a way that offered both function and personality.

Not all items decor items need to be from a store. One of the standout items for this living room was this custom made macrame wall hanger made by a friend of our client. This beautifully handcrafted macrame item brought an element of contrast and texture to the dark wall, as wells as added to the overall bohemian vibe.

Individual Standout Items

It's all in the details! A few pops of color, greenery, and key furniture items in a mid-century modern and bohemian vibe is what really brought this unique design mix to life. After a few small tweaks of the initial design, our client wanted more pops of color. Designer tip? don't be afraid to go bold with your curtains! These golden mustard curtains tie in the other yellow tones in the room creating a beautiful balance while bringing a punch of fun. We love how much personality and color they bring to this dining room! Incorporate smaller decor items such as vases and throw pillows in a similar color throughout for a cohesive and well-balanced space.
